I don't know how it does it, but the nginx web server is a wonder of wonders. 200 files downloading simultaneously - and memory usage didn't go up a single iota. Either I'm missing something and my hosting provider is about to come running at me with a club, or Linux + nginx are extremely efficient.
By the way, nginx was made in Russia.
